The Manila Police District (MPD) Intelligence Unit and Sta. Cruz Police Station, led by PCol. John Guiagui, raided an illegal gambling den inside Manila North Cemetery, on Tuesday noon, February 4.
In a report by RH Boy Gonzales, authorities discovered a video karera operation on 2nd Street, where other gambling activities such as kara-krus and tong-its were also being conducted.
No arrests were made as the operators and staff of the gambling den fled upon the arrival of the police.
According to some caretakers, aside from illegal gambling, drinking sessions and karaoke are also common in the area at night.
The MPD is now investigating whether cemetery guards or City Security Force (CSF) personnel are involved in the illegal activities, as video gambling machines and karaoke equipment were able to enter the premises, and drinking was allegedly tolerated.
Authorities also stated that the cemetery has become a hideout for criminals, prompting them to intensify security measures in the area.
As of now, the Manila North Cemetery administration and the local government have yet to release a statement regarding the incident.
