Four consortiums submitted their bid documents for the modernization of the country's main gateway, according to the Department of Transportation (DOTr) on Wednesday.
In a statement, the DOTr said the firms that submitted their bids were the Manila International Airport Consortium, Asian Airport Consortium, GMR Airports Consortium, and SMC SAP & Co. Consortium.
According to Transportation Secretary Jaime J. Bautista, the NAIA's modernization with the private sector's help will increase its capacity to 60 million passengers annually.
"We all know this airport is already congested with only a capacity of 32 million but handling almost 50 million passengers," Bautista said in his opening remarks.
"In the last few days, we are averaging 145,000 passengers daily during the holidays. We’re expecting that when this airport is turned over to the private sector, we will increase its capacity to 60 million passengers per annum," he added.
Eight companies initially bought documents, however, only four entered their official bid before the 10 AM deadline on Wednesday. Prominent conglomerates entering the bidding include Aboitiz InfraCapital, Asia’s Emerging Dragon Corporation, Alliance Global-InfraCorp Development, and Filinvest Development Corporation which are all part of MIAC.
DOTr said Wednesday’s bidding will determine the qualifications of each bidder, with the technical and financial review to follow later.
