Filipino-SWIFTIES, bet you didn't see this one coming!
The University of the Philippines (UP) will soon offer an elective course on “the conception, construction, and the performance as a celebrity" of American pop star Taylor Swift.
In a Facebook post, the Department of Broadcast Communication announced that they will a Special Topics in Broadcasting class titled “Celebrity Studies: Taylor Swift in Focus” for the second semester of school year 2023 to 2024.
Dr. Cherish Brillon will be teaching the said elective class.
In an interview with Philstar L!fe, Brillon said that aside from the critical analysis of Swift’s explosive career spanning for more than a decade thus far, the course will also explore the intersections of media with class, politics, gender, and race, as well as success and mobility-related fantasies.
"There have been many courses about Taylor Swift in universities abroad and I think there hasn’t been one in the Philippines yet," she said.
Despite being tagged as a "Taylor Swift nation," Brillon said that it is "a bit surprising" that this will be the first class to be held in a Philippine university.
“I think it’s time for us here in the Philippines to look at her in an in-depth manner,” said Brillon, who is also a self-confessed Swiftie since her Red album.
Courses on Swift have been offered in several universities like Stanford University, New York University (where she also has an honorary Doctor of Arts), Harvard University, University of Texas, and Ghent University in Belgium.
