The University of the Philippines (UP) on Friday strongly condemned the killing of one of its students, Sophia Coquilla, who was found dead with 38 stab wounds inside their home in Tagum City, Davao del Norte, on Wednesday, July 9, following a robbery.

In an official statement released on July 11, UP expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss and extended its condolences to Coquilla's family, friends, and the UP community.

“The entire UP community mourns the loss of an Iskolar ng Bayan. We stand in solidarity with Sophia’s family and join them in their call for justice,” the statement read.

The university described the 19-year-old student as "bright mind and future leader" whose untimely death is a loss not only to her loved ones but to the nation.

UP called for a swift, thorough, and transparent investigation to bring the suspects to justice, emphasizing that no family should suffer such a loss without accountability.

"We stand united in pursuing the conviction of those who commit such heinous acts," the university said.

"As we continue to work for a society that protects human life and keeps families safe in their homes, today, we demand justice for Sophia," they added.

The university also used the incident to highlight the urgent need to strengthen efforts in ensuring the safety and protection of all citizens.

"The tragedy is also a stark reminder that we must be vigilant in safeguarding the lives and rights of our fellow citizens, fostering a society where senseless harm is met with unwavering resolve and compassion," UP stressed.

Meanwhile, psychosocial services are being made available to students and affected members of the UP community in light of the tragedy.

Moreover, authorities also reported that several electronic gadgets and a wristwatch were missing from her room.

The two underage suspects were immediately arrested by the police with the help of CCTVs and testimony of the witness, while two others remain at large as police continue their manhunt.
