Police arrested the truck driver who fled after colliding with a jeepney carrying 11 passengers in Cuenca, Batangas, on August 13.

According to a police report, through the joint efforts of the Cuenca Municipal Police Station (CMPS) and assistance from neighboring stations, the 48-year-old suspect, identified as Renato Medej,o was arrested at around 11:30 a.m. on the same day in Barangay Ibabao.

Medejo is now in the custody of the CMPS and is currently facing criminal charges.

The incident happened at around 4:54 a.m. when the jeepney, reportedly moving at a moderate speed, was hit by a tanker truck coming from the opposite direction. The truck driver then immediately fled the scene.

Police investigation revealed that the truck encroached on the opposite lane while allegedly traveling at high speed in a swerving motion, causing a collision with the left side of the jeepney, which caused it to overturn.

Moreover, the truck is reportedly owned by a bulk transport company.

The jeepney driver sustained severe injuries and was rushed to Martin Marasigan District Hospital, but was declared dead on arrival. Meanwhile, the 11 passengers, who also suffered injuries, were initially brought to the same hospital. Some victims were later transferred to other medical facilities for further treatment.

As of the latest update, four victims have been discharged, five victims are still confined, one victim remains under treatment, and one victim is undergoing MRI evaluation.
