Singer-songwriter Mariah Carey mourns the death of her mother and sister, which she confirmed died on the same day over the weekend.
She announced the passing of her two relatives, Patricia (mother) and Alison (sister) Carey in a statement on Monday. However, details on the cause of her relative’s death were not disclosed by the pop star.
“My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day,” Mariah Carey said in a statement.
She added how blessed she feels to have spent the last week with her mother before her passing.
“I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time,” she added.
Patricia was 87 when she died, while Alison was 63. Before their deaths, Mariah wrote in her 2020 memoir, “The Meaning of Mariah Carey,” about her complicated relationship with her mother and the complex dynamic she had with her estranged sister.
Before marrying her then husband, Alfred Roy, Patricia was a Julliard-trained opera singer and vocal coach. When the two got married, they had three children; Alison, Morgan, and Mariah. They divorced when Mariah was three years old.
