President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. paid his respects to slain Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo, who was assassinated inside his Pamplona residence on March 4.
Marcos arrived at the Dumaguete City airport past 6 p.m.
He said he spoke with Degamo's family members, including his wife, Pamplona Mayor Janice Vallega-Degamo, and discussed how to help the eight other people killed and 17 others injured.
He also vowed to give justice to the families of all those killed in the shootout.
Marcos was accompanied by Interior and Local Government Secretary Benhur Abalos, Justice Secretary Boying Remulla, Special Assistant to the President Antonio Lagdameo Jr., and Dumaguete City Mayor Felipe Remollo during the visit.
Earlier, Marcos described Degamo's assassination as "shocking" and "terrifying," citing the governor's assassination in front of his home in San Isidro Village.
Marcos stated that he is pleased with the preliminary findings of the ongoing investigation.
To date, the four suspects in the heinous murder of Degamo and eight others were transferred to the Camp Crame Custodial Center in Quezon City on Tuesday, and the DOJ stated that all four have expressed their willingness to cooperate with investigators.
Three counts of murder and frustrated murder have been filed against suspects Joric Labrador, Joven Javier, Benjie Rodriguez, Osmundo Rivero, and 12 other John Does in Tanjay, Negros Oriental regional trial court.
The four were all former members of the Philippine Army, who were dishonorably charged with either being absent without official leave or being charged with illegal drug use.
Three of the respondents were charged separately in the Bayawan City regional trial court with illegal possession of firearms, ammunition, and explosives.
Degamo was governor of Negros Oriental province from 2011 to June 2022 and then again from October 2022 until his death on March 4, 2022.
He and eight other people were killed while distributing financial aid to families in need.
