Manila Zoo opened to the public on Monday, November 21, after undergoing rehabilitation.
"Maasahan ninyo na mas maganda, mas malinis at mas maayos na ang Manila Zoo," said Atty. Princess Abante, spokesperson and communication head of Manila City mayor Honey Lacuna, during DZRH's Magandang Umaga Pilipinas.
Abante said that the public can view various animals in the 62-year old zoo still including the 40-year old elephant Mali, the Siberian white tiger named Kois, ostriches, zebras, and crocodiles.
She added that the zoo will feature additional attractions including giraffes, and hippopotamuses by 2023.
Abante, however, stressed that currently the zoo can only accomodate a maximum of 2,000 visitors per day due to the 2019 Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic and guests need to pre-register online at manilazoo.ph.
"We want to make sure na magkakaroon pa rin ng enough physical distancing kapag pumasok ka sa loob ng Manila Zoo," Abante explained.
In 2019, then-Manila City mayor Joseph Estrada ordered the indefinite closure of Manila Zoo after the Department of Environment and Natural Resources identified the establishment as one of the major pollutants of Manila Bay.
