The Local Government Unit (LGU) of Manila will award cash incentives to two athletes who participated in the 2024 Paris Olympics, Carlos Yulo and EJ Obiena, Mayor Honey Lacuna confirmed on Thursday.
Dubbed as "mga batang Maynila", Filipino gymnast and two-time Olympic gold medalist Carlos "Caloy" Yulo will be awarded with a cash reward of PHP 2 million, while World No. 2 Pole Vaulter Ernest John Obiena is set to receive PHP 500,000 from the City of Manila.
Lacuna emphasized that, whether they win or not, they value the efforts of their athletes.
"Yung karangalan na ibinibigay sa atin, ‘yan ang ating binibigyang pagpapahalaga," Lacuna said during an exclusive interview with DZRH on Thursday.
She also mentioned that they are preparing a hero’s welcome, although the date and route has not yet been determined.
"Inaantay din namin ang date ng kanilang pagbalik dito sa Pilipinas. Wala pang binibigay sa atin na definite date kung kailan sila darating," said Lacuna.
On August 5, Lacuna announced that the Manila LGU will organize a hero’s parade for Yulo, where the Olympian will receive cash incentives, honors, and recognition.
