The Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MDRRMC) raised the city’s alert status to red alert at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 21, as a precautionary measure against the possible nationwide impact of the southwest monsoon or habagat.
“Ang tanggapan po ng Manila City DRRM Office kasama ang miyembro ng aming Manila City DRRM Council ay nagtaas ng RED ALERT status simula kaninang alas onse ng umaga (11:00AM) bilang paghahanda sa possibleng epekto ng Hanging Habagat sa buong bansa,” said MDRRMC on Facebook.
The alert level was escalated following forecasts from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) and the city’s resident meteorologist, which indicate that moderate to heavy rainfall may begin affecting Manila on Tuesday, July 22.
“Ang pagtataas ng alert na ito ay ukol na rin sa direktiba ng ating butihing punong lungsod Isko Moreno Domagoso na maging handa ngayong tag-ulan,” the advisory reads.
“Inaabisuhan po namin ang publiko na manatiling handa at alerto lalo na po sa mga lugar na malapit sa dagat at mga ilog dahil sa possibleng pagbaha,” the Manila DRRM Office added.
They also reminded residents to regularly monitor official updates and to follow all advisories issued by authorities.
