Gilas Pilipinas will take on host Saudi Arabia in a knockout duel for a FIBA Asia Cup quarterfinal berth on Monday, August 11 (Tuesday, August 12, 12:00 a.m. Manila time), with the winner earning the right to challenge reigning champion Australia.
Saudi Arabia arranged the clash after securing second place in Group C with a commanding 84-59 victory over India on Saturday, August 9 (Sunday in Manila). Mohammed Alsuwailem powered the hosts with 15 points and 14 rebounds, while Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman chipped in 14 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists.
The hosts recovered from a 25-24 first-quarter deficit by holding India to just six points in the second period, building a 45-31 halftime lead and cruising the rest of the way. The win capped a strong preliminary campaign for Saudi Arabia, which also pushed China to the limit in a narrow 93-88 loss and stunned Jordan, 77-73.
Gilas, meanwhile, endured a rough start in Group D with back-to-back losses to Chinese Taipei and New Zealand, both marred by early deficits. However, the Filipinos regained their footing with a 66-57 win over Iraq to clinch third place and stay alive in the tournament.
Under the format, only the top team in each group advances directly to the quarterfinals, while the second- and third-ranked squads face off in crossover playoffs for the remaining slots.
