The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) will study the alleged Php 203 billion unpaid estate tax of the Marcos family, its new Commissioner Romeo 'Jun' Lumagui said on Tuesday.

Lumagui vowed that the agency would take action on the case during an ambush interview with the reporters.

“Pag-aralan natin ‘yan at sisiguraduhin natin na lahat ng aksyon na gagawin natin diyan ay naaayon lang sa batas. Ayun lang po ang gagawin natin diyan,” he said.

In 1997, the Supreme Court (SC) ruled with finality that the Marcos family had to pay the national government a Php 23 billion in estate tax.

However, the amount swelled further to Php 203 billion due to non-payment and interest.

In an interview with TV host and actress Toni Gonzaga last September, President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr. said he is willing to reopen the unpaid estate tax case for it to be finally resolved.

He claimed that his family did not have the chance to answer the case since they were in the United States during that time.

"But rather to say that we were never allowed to argue because when this case came out we were all in the United States. So when it was the time for us to answer, we had no chance to answer because we were nakakulong (detained) in Air Force Base in Hawaii," Marcos earlier said.
