Filipina weightlifter Nesthy Petecio will receive at least Php 17 million after she won the silver medal at the Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.
Republic Act 10699, also known as the National Athletes and Coaches Benefits and Incentives Act, guarantees that Petecio will receive Php 5 million from the Philippine government.
Business tycoons Manny V. Pangilinan, and Ramon Ang have also promised to each give Php 5 million to Filipino athletes who will bring home a silver medal from the Tokyo Games.
Tokyo Olympics silver medalists will also receive Php 2 million courtesy of House Deputy Speaker and 1-Pacman Partylist Rep. Michael 'Mikee' Romero, a known sports patron.
Petecio settled for an Olympic silver medal after losing to Sena Irie of Japan at the final match of the women's featherweight boxing event on Tuesday, August 3, via unanimous decision.
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque congratulated Petecion for winning silver in the Olympics, and said that she made the Philippines proud for her accomplishment.
"Ang nanalo ng ginto ay ang boksingerong galing Japan but nonetheless napakagaling po ng ipinakitang lakas at gilas ng ating Nesthy Petecio. Congratulations, Nesthy Petecio, for the silver in boxing," Roque said in a virtual press briefing.
