The first library in a Davao Region Jail Facility has finally opened on Monday at the Davao City Jail (DCJ) Annex.
The library was built through the funds provided by the Social Entrepreneurship Technology and Business Institute (SETBI) College, the backbone of the "College Education Behind Bars" project.
In an interview on Tuesday, DCJ-Annex jail officer Harvey Bryan Malnegro stated that PDLs enrolled in the SETBI and the alternative learning system (ALS) could use their library beginning at 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.
Currently, the facility has eight PDLs enrolled in the SETBI program and 80 PDLs for ALS.
He stated that the tiny nook between College Education Behind Bars and DCJ-Annex had been transformed and furnished with book shelves.
Jail Chief Supt. Isabelo Cartin Jr., director of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) 11 (Davao Region), praised the jail management's series of activities, emphasizing the importance of the library's opening.
Susan Cariaga, vice president of the SETBI, also promised to digitize books in order to make them more accessible to PDLs.
