Two-time Olympic gold medalist Carlos 'Caloy' Yulo and bronze medalist Aira Villegas had the honor of carrying the Philippine flag as the 2024 Paris Olympics came to a close on Monday (Manila time).
"As we bid adieu to Paris 2024, our flag is carried high by Carlos Yulo, our two-time gold medalist in gymnastics, and Aira Villegas, who earned a hard-fought bronze in boxing. Mabuhay ang Pilipinas!" Philippine Olympic Committee said in a Facebok post on Sunday.
The closing ceremony marks the end of the Games and highlights the participation of outstanding athletes from across the world.
The role of flag bearers taken by Yulo and Villegas represents a significant moment for the Philippines, highlighting the nation’s achievements and pride.
Carlos clinched his first gold medal after topping the finals of the men's artistic gymnastics floor exercise event. He was able to bag another gold in the vault event.
Furthermore, Villegas earned a bronze medal in the 50kg division of women’s boxing, while fellow Filipina boxer Nesthy Petecio also won a bronze in the women’s 57kg division at the Olympics.
