A group of women staged a 'Purple Day of Action' protest at Malcolm Square on Saturday to denounce what they described as widespread "plunder, corruption, and bureaucrat capitalism" in the government.
Led by the Gabriela Women’s Party together with Innabuyog – Alliance of Women’s Organizations in the Cordillera and other women's groups, the protesters timed their demonstration on the birthday of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
Members of the groups expressed their frustration over alleged irregularities in flood control projects, naming several senators, congressmen, and officials of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) as being involved in the anomalies.
According to the protesters, the reported corruption exemplifies the greed entrenched in government institutions.
They further emphasized that the action at Malcolm Square was only the start of a series of mobilizations aimed at exposing and holding accountable politicians and officials who they claim enriched themselves with public funds.
The women’s organizations reiterated their call for an end to corruption in government and for those involved to be prosecuted under the law.
