The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) called on all protesters to conduct their activities with discipline and respect for the law, as several groups staged demonstrations across Metro Manila.
“We respect and uphold the constitutional right of every Filipino to assemble and express their views. At the same time, we remind everyone that these freedoms must be carried out peacefully and responsibly, without endangering public safety or disrupting community life,” the NCRPO said in a statement on Thursday, September 11.
“We appeal to all participants to conduct their activities with discipline and respect for the law,” they added.
This comes after hundreds of protesters gathered outside the EDSA Shrine to demand accountability in the ongoing flood control corruption scandal.
The move, led by groups including Akbayan Partylist, Tindig Pilipinas, and Youth Against Kurakot (YaK!), protesters denounced anomalous projects that allegedly misused funds meant for vital infrastructure.
Authorities reminded participants that "any violation of the law" would not be tolerated.
The public was also advised to "remain alert, avoid protest areas when possible, and cooperate with authorities to ensure everyone’s safety."
Despite the large turnout, authorities assured the public that they are fully prepared to maintain peace, order, and security amid the ongoing and upcoming protest actions.
"Our police units are on full alert and ready to protect both demonstrators and the general public. Security measures have been set to prevent untoward incidents such as clashes, vandalism, and traffic disruptions, while ensuring that the rights of all are safeguarded," the statement read.
As of this writing, police reported no major incidents, crediting the disciplined conduct of demonstrators and effective security measures.
