The residents from Mayhaligue in Tondo, Manila, are continuously guarding the entrance gate, following the supposed demolition yesterday, May 26.
RH 29 Boy Gonzales reported on Tuesday, May 27, that residents continue to guard the entrance and exit points in the residential area. This comes after the tension between the demolition team and the locals of the Mayhaligue Street in Tondo.
Additionally, residents are seen climbing up the gate to be able to enter the street. Locals remain firm in refusing to leave the area, although the demolition team had given them a week to evacuate.
The report also mentioned the town’s sheriff had offered residents financial assistance during the evacuation. However, some residents stood their ground and argued they should be given a relocation site instead.
Gonzales clarified that no relocation sites were offered to the residents as the land is owned by a private corporation, not the government. Additionally, the new owner only gave locals financial assistance for their evacuation.
Various groups also expressed their support for the residents, with some asking the government to intervene as 400 families are affected by the demolition.
Two barangays in Mayhaligue in Tondo, Manila, were scheduled for demolition yesterday. However, residents quickly blocked the area just as authorities were about to attempt to demolish the place a third time.
Police also arrested four individuals on Monday for obstruction of justice as they restrained the demolition, Gonzales reported.
