The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Monday, August 11, that Severe Tropical Storm Gorio is expected to intensify into a typhoon within the next 12 hours.

"GORIO may reach typhoon category within the next 12 hours before gradually weakening throughout the remaining forecast period," PAGASA stated.

As of 5:00 a.m., Gorio was located 1,305 km east of Extreme Northern Luzon, with maximum sustained winds of 110 km/h and gusts of up to 135 km/h, moving west at 25 km/h.

PAGASA said Gorio is unlikely to directly affect the country in the next three days. However, if its track shifts southward, Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 may be raised over Extreme Northern Luzon.

The storm is expected to cause moderate seas (1.0–1.5 m) in the coastal waters of Extreme Northern Luzon. Small vessels, including motor bancas, are advised to take precautions or avoid sailing in these conditions.

Gorio is forecast to move westward in the next 24 hours, then shift west-northwestward from Tuesday afternoon, August 12. It may make landfall over northeastern Taiwan on Wednesday, August 13, before exiting the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Wednesday evening or early Thursday morning.
