Significant number of teachers love teaching - Briones
by Kristan Carag07 June 2023

A study by the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization - Regional Center for Educational Innovation and Technology (SEAMECO Innotech) showed that love for teachers motivates them to remain in their profession.

SEAMECO Innotech Center Director and former Education Secretary Leonor Briones said on Saturday, June 3, that a 'very significant' number of teachers want to teach.

"The information that we gathered was very interesting kasi nakita namin na mayroon talagang mga teacher na gustung-gustong mag-teach," Briones said during DZRH's Special on Saturday.

"Kasi kung minsan ang ating impression sa education binabase natin sa mga impression lamang na hirap na hirap, pumasok na lang mag-teacher kasi para maka-abroad and all that pero mayroon talagang gustong magturo," she added.

However, Briones also admitted that some teachers have other reasons for choosing their profession.

"Ako I personally interviewed a lot of teachers, tinatanong ko bakit kayo naging teacher. Ang sabi kasi iyon ang pinakamura na course na wala masyadong laboratory," Briones revealed.

"Mayroon din iba kasi ginagastusan nila kanilang partners from abroad para makatapos sila," she shared.

The former DEPED chief stressed the need to identify, and develop these educators who have an inherent love for teaching.

"Teaching is built into Philippine society kasi very active ang ating mga church organizations, mga civil society organizations na nagtuturo palagi," Briones said.
