As of 8 p.m., Nando was located 85 kilometers west northwest of Calayan, Cagayan, packing maximum sustained winds of 215 kilometers per hour near the center and gusts of up to 265 kph. It is moving west at 20 kph.
PAGASA said the super typhoon has reached its peak intensity but may still undergo slight intensification before it weakens within the next 24 hours as it moves over a marginally favorable environment in the West Philippine Sea.
Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon enhanced by Nando will bring strong to gale-force winds over Metro Manila, Central Luzon (areas not under wind signal), CALABARZON, Bicol Region, MIMAROPA, Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, and Dinagat Islands on Tuesday.
“There is a high risk of life-threatening storm surge with peak heights exceeding 3.0 m within the next 24 hours over the low-lying or exposed coastal localities of Batanes, Cagayan including Babuyan Islands, Ilocos Norte, and Ilocos Sur,” state meteorologists warned.
PAGASA said Nando is expected to continue moving away from the Babuyan Islands Monday night and exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Tuesday morning.
