President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Wednesday launched the 50 percent fare discount to senior citizens and persons with disability (PWDs) on LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3, starting on Wednesday, June 16.

According to Marcos, the new fare policy is in line with the administration’s ongoing commitment to improve public transportation and provide targeted financial relief to commuters who need it most.

The President emphasized that around 13 million senior citizens and 7 million PWDs stand to benefit from the fare discount.

The initiative increases the existing fare discount for seniors and PWDs from 20 percent to 50 percent, and takes effect immediately.

The announcement follows a similar move by the DOTr in June, when it implemented a 50 percent fare discount for students riding the same train lines, in compliance with the President’s directive.

Aside from Marcos, the launch held at the MRT-3 Santolan-Annapolis southbound station was also attended by Transportation Secretary Vivencio Dizon, MRT-3 General Manager Michael Capati, and Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Secretary Dave Gomez.
