Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr. has ordered all the police regional directors to assess the security of local government officials in their respective areas.
On Friday, he urged regional police chiefs to conduct a "threat assessment" in order to identify if they have enough security from the PNP.
"Our order for all police regional directors is to start conducting a threat assessment on elected as well as appointed officials in their areas so that we would know their current state, whether the PNP is providing enough or inadequate security," the police chief said.
This was after the three reported attacks against government officials only happened in one week.
The recent ambush was on Wednesday night, Feb 22, where Mayor Ohto Montwal Caumbo of Datu Montwal, Maguindanao del Sur, was shot in his waist and arms as he rode across Gil Puyat Avenue, Pasay City.
This followed the ambush incident on Feb 19 in Bagabag, Nueva Vizcaya.
Aparri Vice-Mayor Rommel Alameda was killed by armed suspects, clad in police uniforms.
On Friday, Feb 17, at around 4 PM, Lanao del Sur Governor Mamintal 'Bombit' Alonto-Adiong, Jr. was shot by unidentified gunmen.
The governor was wounded and rushed to a provincial hospital, while his three security personnel and driver were killed.
Meanwhile, Azurin has also underlined the need to know if the officials have rivalries and active threats for the PNP to know the necessary security adjustments.
