The Philippine National Police (PNP) announced that it is looking into promising leads in the killing of veteran journalist, president emeritus of the Publishers Association of the Philippines, Inc. (PAPI), and former Aklan mayor Juan “Johnny” Dayang.

In a press briefing at Camp Crame, PNP spokesperson Police Brigadier General Jean Fajardo confirmed that regional police investigators are tracking a “good lead” that may be connected to Dayang’s past professional roles, both as a journalist and as mayor of Aklan.

“Lahat po ng anggulo ay tinitingnan po ng CIDG at ang commitment po sa atin ng provincial director, even the regional director - and by the way na nandoon po ngayon sa mismong crime scene at kumakausap po doon sa mga witnesses at nagkakalap po ng ebidensya,” she stressed.

According to reports, he was watching television when an unidentified assailant fired at him from outside his home.

As of now, a Special Investigation Task Group has already been formed to focus on the case.

Meanwhile, PNP chief Police General Rommel Francisco Marbil has also activated the Media Security Vanguard, a special unit dedicated to safeguarding journalists, despite Dayang having long retired from active media work.
