The local government unit (LGU) of Quezon City on Sunday, April 7, announced the arrival of additional medicines against pertussis or whooping cough and other diseases.
In a Facebook post, Quezon City LGU said antibiotics and six-in-one vaccines against pertussis, diphtheria, tetanus, hepatitis b, poliomyelitis, and Haemophilus influenza have arrived and are ready for public use.
It reminded Quezon City citizens to have their children vaccinated in the nearest health center to prevent getting infected with pertussis.
Based on Quezon City Epidemiology and Surveillance Division's available data, a total of 33 pertussis cases have been recorded in the city from January 1 to March 30, 2024.
Five patients reportedly died due to the infectious respiratory disease.
In late March, the Quezon City LGU declared a pertussis outbreak.
The Department of Health defines pertussis as a highly contagious bacterial disease caused by a bacteria called Bordetella pertussis, and this can be transimitted through droplets produced from sneezing or coughing.
Symptoms include runny nose, low-grade fever, mild and occasional cough, and apnea.
