The driver of a motorcycle used in a "riding-in-tandem" attack that resulted in the death of a businessman in Jaen, Nueva Ecija, was found dead in the town's river, allegedly after jumping in an attempt to escape from authorities.
The ambush occurred on Saturday at noon in Barangay Apo Esquibel, Jaen, where the 39-year-old victim, who was alone in his SUV, was shot by the assailants.
In a report by RH Grace Sansano, the suspect's body was discovered in a river near the area, where he is said to have jumped into the water while fleeing from pursuing police officers. Reports indicate that the two suspects were apprehended after a brief pursuit.
The shooting took place just a short distance from a checkpoint. The police were able to respond quickly, leading to the arrest of the gunman.
He now faces charges of murder, violation of the COMELEC gun ban, and RA 9165. A firearm, ammunition, grenades, and drugs were recovered from him.
According to Jaen Chief of Police Major Ernesto Esguerra, the presence of the checkpoint near the crime scene was instrumental in the police's quick response, which enabled them to act within five to ten minutes.
The investigation is now focused on identifying the mastermind behind the crime.
