The oil spill from the sunken tanker will possibly reach Coron in Palawan, according to the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSa) on Monday.
In the latest Marine Pollution Surveillance Report, PhilSa said satellite images from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have shown that the oil slick was 6.5 nautical miles (nm) from east of Coron with 33 nm in length and 2.5 nm wide.
"The data was taken with the Canadian Space Agency RADARSAT-2 satellite on 31 March 2023. This map is still subject to field validation," it noted.
"Confidence was too low to designate anomalies closer to shore as oil due to the possibility of false positives. The total area of oil may therefore be larger than indicated," PhilSa added.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the Municipal government of Coron announced that there is no oil spill detected in any barangays in Coron.
"It is safe to visit our island destinations," Coron Municipal Mayor said in an advisory posted on Facebook.
The Coron local government advised its constituents to report if there are oil spills sighted in their respective areas to the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) via mobile numbers 09176800818 and 09166252126.
