The National Telecommunication Commission (NTC) has ordered three telecommunication companies to text blast to warn subscribers against fake text jobs, lucky winners, and other text scams but this time bearing the names of subscribers.
In a memorandum dated Aug. 26 but released only on Wednesday, the NTC directed the Dito Telecommunity Corporation, Globe Telecoms Inc., and Smart Communications Inc. to send a text blast warning from Aug. 31 to Sept. 6.
“The proliferation of fake text jobs, lucky winners, and similar money scams targeting the general public has persisted over a month of August across telecommunication networks in the country with the latest variant including the name of its recipient,” it said.
The NTC requested the telecoms to send the following message: “BABALA: HUWAG PO TAYONG MANIWALA SA TEXT SCAMS NA NAGLALAMAN NG INYONG PANGALAN NA NAG-AALOK NG TRABAHO, PABUYA O PERA. ITO PO AY ISANG SCAM.”
The three telecoms are also instructed to accelerate the process of blocking SIM cards used by scammers.
Likewise, they are asked to enhance the messaging of their respective public information campaign to “factor in the new variants” of text scams.
The three telecoms are expected to submit a written report to the Office of the Commissioner on or before Sept 9.
Senator Ramon Bong Revilla, Jr. on Wednesday wrote a letter to the NTC, asking them to act on the rising incidents of spam and text messages.
