Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas suspended face-to-face classes from pre-school to senior high school in both private and public schools in the city for two days due to the forecasted intense heat.
Based on Executive Order No. 047 series of 2024 signed by Treñas on March 31, onsite classes are suspended today, April 1, and on Tuesday, April 2.
"The suspension of onsite follows the 41 degrees Celcius or "danger" level heat index forecast of Pagasa [Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration] on the city from Apil 1-2, 2024," the Iloilo City mayor stated.
Treñas cited PAGASA's forecast that the heat index in Iloilo City will reach 41 degrees Celcius today and 42 degrees Celsius on April 2.
He reminded schools that the suspended face-to-face classes shall be shifted to modular and online classes as directed by the education department.
"Learners are advised to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, stay indoors, especially during the hottest part of the day, wear lightweight, breathable clothing, and avoid strenuous activities during peak heat hours," the Iloilo City mayor added.
As per Treñas, the suspension of face-to-face classes in college and graduate school will be up to the announcement of their respective school heads or administrators.
The Iloilo City mayor urged all school heads "to implement measures to ensure the health and safety of students and staff within school premises which includes the adoption of alternative learning delivery modes in view of the face-to-face classes."
