Acting Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief PLTGEN Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. visited police officers hospitalized after being injured in the anti-corruption rally in Manila that escalated into a riot on Sunday, September 21.
Authorities said the rally, which began peacefully, turned violent as protesters clashed with police from Ayala Bridge to Mendiola and Recto Avenue. Despite reminders from officers urging the crowd to remain calm, tensions boiled over, resulting in injuries on both sides.
According to the Manila Police District (MPD), at least 121 police personnel sustained injuries while keeping peace and order during the chaos.
During his hospital visit, Nartatez praised the officers for their professionalism under pressure, assuring them that their sacrifices were appreciated by the PNP.
Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla confirmed that while the incident left many injured, there were no reported casualties from the riot.
Investigation is still ongoing to determine the cause of the violence and identify the person behind the outrage.
