In response to safety concerns, the Airport Ground Operations and Safety Division (AGOSD) raised a Lightning Red Alert, leading to the temporary suspension of flight and ground operations at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).
The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) issued an advisory, stating that the alert was activated at 2:13 p.m.
The primary purpose of this alert is to mitigate potential risks posed by lightning strikes in the vicinity.
"Flight and ground operations at the NAIA are suspended. The alert is a safety measure taken to prevent untoward incident from happening when lightnings are prevalent in the immediate area and may endanger personnel, passengers and even flight operations," the advisory read.
Providing a subsequent update, MIAA informed that the AGOSD later downgraded the lightning alert from red to yellow at 2:30 p.m.
As a result, flight operations at NAIA promptly resumed, bringing relief to passengers and airport personnel.
Earlier in the day, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) had forecasted partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms over Metro Manila and other parts of the country.
