The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) has confirmed that operations at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) have remained normal following the successful completion of critical maintenance activities on the country's air traffic management system (ATMS).

According to CAAP Deputy Director General for Operations, Edgardo Diaz, the critical portion of the maintenance activity involved the transfer of power sources from the old uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to the new standby UPS units.

The transfer was completed at 3:14 a.m. without any issues, and installation of the new UPS units is still ongoing.

"Sa nakuha naming report sa ating MIAA, wala naman pong disruption, hindi rin po nagkaroon ng delay. So, maayos po. We started working sa UPS po natin at exactly 2 o'clock in the morning," he said during an interview with DZRH Damdaming Bayan.

The two-hour maintenance activity was part of the CAAP's efforts to improve the ATMS and prevent a repeat of the Jan. 1 incident that resulted in significant delays for thousands of passengers.

The successful completion of the maintenance activity has been met with positive feedback, as Philippine Airlines confirmed that all flights within the 2 a.m. to 4 a.m. maintenance period today, May 17, were able to depart and arrive without any delays.

Diaz also confirmed that the Automatic Voltage Regulator was fixed on May 3 and added that the next step for the CAAP is to upgrade its software system, with details regarding this currently being finalized with its maintenance provider.
