All three, Bohari Basco, Oman Aliman, and alias "Ari" rode a Kawasaki Bajaj motorcycle and attempted to rob Sgt. John Acosta Valdez, a soldier on leave, at gunpoint of his own Suzuki motorcycle.
However, they were unable to start the vehicle and scattered when they heard a police patrol car approaching, as reported Jun Dimacutac on DZRH News' Magandang Umaga Pilipinas segment.
The police chased them and cornered them along the border between Barangays Suben and Mangalen. The suspects opened fire, which triggered a shootout.
Basco and Aliman surrendered when the policemen's assault rifles killed Ari. Both sustained wounds from the fight.
The two have been detained at the President Quirino Municipal Police Station. Quirino PNP recovered one caliber .45 pistol, a homemade 12-gauge shotgun, a homemade pistol, and the Bajaj motorcycle.
Officials in the area said Basco and Aliman were just two from a group of carnappers behind at least 20 motorcycle hold-ups in multiple barangays, in the towns of Lambayong, Tacurong City, and South Cotabato.
They also believe the motorcycle the suspects were using was one of the many motorcycles the group stole.
