The government issued Executive Order No. 70 to boost the potential of the Philippine film industry and strengthen the Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP).
The order, signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin on behalf of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., aims to strengthen the sector by providing support and development opportunities.
"To maximize the full potential of the Philippine Film Industry, it is imperative to ensure that world-class Filipino talents in the field of motion picture arts and sciences are given due recognition and assistance by the National Government," the order read.
“It is necessary to strengthen the FAP and further define its duties and functions to complement the programs, activities, and projects of existing government bodies involved in the promotion and development of the Philippine Film Industry,” it added.
Furthermore, the FAP was reorganized under the DTI's supervision by the EO, with a Board of Trustees comprised of officials from multiple government agencies.
The FAP’s primary role is to recognize outstanding films and artists, aiming to boost and promote the country's film industry.
As part of this initiative, an annual National Film Awards will be established to honor, promote, and showcase the exceptional talents and achievements of Filipinos in motion picture arts and sciences, highlighting their world-class capabilities.
The FAP may work hand in hand with the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), and other relevant agencies in setting up the National Film Awards.
The initial funding for implementing the order will be drawn from the existing appropriations of the FAP’s member agencies. The EO further directs the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) to identify additional funding sources for effective execution.
