Marcos camp confident vs CARMMA's petition to SC
by John Dexter Tilo20 May 2022

The camp of presumptive president Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. has expressed confidence that the Supreme Court will side with them in a petition filed by an anti-Martial Law group.

The group, called the Campaign Against the Return of the Marcoses and Martial Law (CARMMA), is urging the highest court in a petition to stop Congress from canvassing votes and proclaiming Marcos Jr. as the president.

Furthermore, it is asking the Supreme Court to overturn the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) decision to junk the petition to disqualify Marcos' certificate of candidacy.

In response to the petition, however, the Marcos camp said that it is confident that the processes will uphold the victory of Marcos Jr., who has been leading by a huge margin in the partial and unofficial election tally.

"We are confident, though, that the processes will uphold the overwhelming mandate that president-elect Bongbong Marcos has earned in the elections and we continue to call for unity and for all of us to move forward and proceed with the national activity of building this nation," said Marcos spokesperson Vic Rodriguez in a statement.

According to Rodriguez, they understand that the petitioners "want to exhaust all their remedies under the law, regardless of the dim chances of success."

"We live in a democracy and they enjoy rights under the constitution, including an appeal or to seek for a restraining order," he said.

The case filed by CARMMA is just one of the two petitions filed to the Supreme Court that seeks to overturn COMELEC's decision on the disqualification cases against Marcos' candidacy.

Previously, civic leaders led by Theodore Te also asked the high court to issue a temporary restraining order to block the counting of votes cast for Marcos Jr.
