President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. named Jose Torres Jr., former Director General of the Philippine Information Agency (PIA), as the Executive Director of the Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS).
“Under the helm of the newly appointed head of the Presidential Task Force on Media Security or PTFoMS, Executive Director Jose Torres, we strengthen our resolve in safeguarding the lives of media personnel and practitioners,” Marcos said during the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas’ (KBP) 50th top-level management conference held in Tagaytay City on Thursday.
Marcos also mentioned that he had instructed the PTFoMS to step up its efforts in preparation for the 2025 midterm elections.
He particularly instructed the PTFoMS to direct their efforts towards protecting local media workers, who, due to their brave coverage, are especially exposed to threats against their life, liberty, and security.
The President also recognized the vital role of the media in combating misinformation, highlighting its importance in countering the harmful influence of false narratives spread by troll farms and other malicious groups.
He expressed hope that journalists will continue to find innovative ways to connect with the public, noting that the media’s constant evolution requires the adoption of new skills, resources, and technologies.
Torres succeeded Paul Gutierrez, whose term as head of the PTFoMS ended in September after the Palace chose not to renew or extend it.
