A few days before the April 26 deadline for SIM card registration, Globe Telecom said on Monday that it made use of the emergency cell broadcast (ECB) system to encourage users.
According to Globe, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) has no objections to ECB usage.
Moreover, the NDRRMC and other government agencies were allowed to use the telco network system to blast warnings during disasters and possible emergencies.
Globe stated that it used the system to "urgently advise" consumers to avert SIM disconnection.
It further said that deactivation will cause disruptions in critical SMS-linked services such as financial transactions, healthcare, learning, livelihood, transportation, and delivery, among others.
As of April 22, Globe had over 35.8 million SIM registrations out of a total subscriber base of 86.7 million.
Globe, DITO Telecommunity, and Smart Communications have all urged the government to extend the April 26 deadline in order for users to obtain proper IDs.
According to telecommunications companies, among the barriers preventing people from voting are a lack of IDs and a lack of digital knowledge.
Meanwhile, regulators have not yet extended the SIM registration deadline.
