The year-long intermission is almost over, ‘Wicked’ fans!
An epic conclusion awaits, as Universal Pictures released the official trailer for the Broadway film adaptation’s second installment, “Wicked: For Good.”
After the global success of last year’s “Wicked,” Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo are returning to the Emerald City as Glinda and Elphaba, respectively. For this final chapter, the witches of Oz are confronted with the consequences of their choices.
Elphaba, now demonized as The Wicked Witch of the West, lives in exile and hides within the Ozian forest. Based on the film’s description, Elphaba is continuing her fight for the freedom of Oz’s silenced animals, including her efforts to expose the truth about The Wizard (Jeff Goldblum).
In contrast, Glinda has successfully become the symbol of Goodness for all of Oz and lives in a palace in Emerald City, soaking in her fame and popularity.
According to Variety, the film’s logline says that the second installment is “set in the Land of Oz, before and after Dorothy Gale’s arrival from Kansas,” and will cover the “events of the musical’s second act, following Elphaba and Glinda’s friendship being put to the test as they embrace their new respective identities as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch of the North, and how the consequences of their actions will change all of Oz forever.”
“Wicked: For Good” also marks the return of: Jonathan Bailey as Prince Fiyero; Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible; Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard of Oz; Ethan Slater as Boq Woodsman; Marissa Bode as Nessarose Thropp; Bronwyn James as ShenShen; and Bowen Yang as Pfannee.
Consequently, the second installment also features the appearance of Dorothy Gale, Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion from the 1939 film, “The Wizard of Oz.” This adventure shows The Wizard ordering the bunch to bring him the broom of the Wicked Witch of the West.
Jon M. Chu will again, direct the film, with a screenplay by Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox.
Based on the generation-defining musical stage play by Grammy and Oscar winner Stephen Schwartz, last year’s “Wicked” film instantly became the highest-grossing Broadway adaptation to date.
Following its release, it garnered 10 Academy Award nominations, including: Best Picture, Best Lead Actress for Erivo, Best Supporting Actress for Grande, Best Costume Design, Best Editing, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Production Design, Best Original Score, Best Sound, and Best Visual Effects.
In March 2025, the iconic “Wicked” film duo floored the crowd at the 97th Oscars with a gravity-defying performance and homage to the “Wizard of Oz” universe.
“Wicked: For Good” will premiere on November 21.
