Gilas Pilipinas Women fell short of a comeback win against Japan Universiade and tasted the second loss of the team on Monday, July 8, in the 2024 William Jones Cup in Taiwan.

Japan remains undefeated in the tournament after defeating the Filipinas, 85-83.

Afril Bernardino registered 21 points and 11 rebounds while Jack Animam contributed 20 points and 11 rebounds as the Philippine National Women's Basketball Team dropped to a 1-2 win-loss record.

In the final seconds of the game, the Filipinas tied the score, 83-all, but Aoi Yamada buried two free throws to bring the lead back to Japan.

Naomi Panganiban tried to give the win to the Philippines but her three-point attempt bounced off the basket.

Yuka Fujisawa and Takako Sato both finished with 13 points while Haruka Yamamoto added 11 points for the Japanese side to earn their third straight victory in the tournament.

Gilas Pilipinas have another chance to claim win number two when the squad faces Thailand on Thursday, July 9.
