Expelled Congressman Arnolfo “Arnie” Teves Jr. will be undergoing “major surgery,” said his legal counsel Atty. Ferdinand Topacio, after experiencing severe pain in his stomach.

Topacio said that after a doctor examined Teves at the unnamed public hospital he is presently being kept in, it was decided that he must be operated on at another hospital—preferably St. Luke’s Medical Center in BGC, Taguig.

“... (T)he doctors therein have decided that Mr. Teves' condition requires MAJOR SURGERY in another hospital with additional equipment and facilities … Thus, Mr. Teves had been recommended by government doctors to be transferred to St. Luke's Medical Center, Bonifacio Global City,” Topacio said.

This had gone through the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology’s (BJMP) official protocols, the lawyer said. He added that the trial courts before which the former lawmaker has pending cases have all been informed of his situation.

He declined to disclose Teves’ diagnosis. As of reporting, Teves’ transfer is being processed.

Earlier, the detained, former Negros Oriental 3rd District representative was purportedly “buckling over” from pain and almost “on his knees” requesting medical treatment at a hospital, which Topacio claimed was initially denied due to “protocol.”

He said Teves’ stomach pains began at around midnight, and he was taken to the hospital by 7 a.m.
