Former president Fidel V. Ramos was laid to rest on Tuesday, August 9 at the Libingan ng Mga Bayani at Fort Bonifacio.

Ramos, who was the country's 12th president, was accorded with full military honors, from the departure of his urn at the Heritage Park upon his arrival at the Presidential Section Gravesite past 11 a.m. It was carried by a member of the Ramos family.

The late president was buried near the grave of former president Elpidio Quirino.

"Alerta Filipinas" and Christian songs "How Great Thou Art" and "Ama Namin" were played during the funeral honors, as requested by the former president and relayed by his daughter Angel Ramos Jones.

Newly-installed Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief Lieutenant General Bartolome Vicente Bacarro handed over the funeral flag to Ramos' widow, former First Lady Amelita Ramos.

Among those who paid last respects to the leader was President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr.

Ramos' gravesite was decorated with flowers and other plants from Ming's Garden, which is under the supervision of the former First Lady.

In a short speech, the former first lady thanked the public for their support.

"Alam niyo, mahirap ang buhay sa military, pero kinaya namin. Kayang-kaya niya (Ramos) at he was able to raise five daughters, eight grandsons and five granddaughter. Kaya maraming salamat sa tulong niyo. Sabi nga niya, 'kaya natin ito,'" she said.

Ramos passed away on July 31.

He became a hero to many for defecting from Marcos' government, where he led the national police force, spurring the dictator's downfall during the 1986 popular uprising against his rule.

Others, though, would not forgive or forget his role in enforcing martial law under the Marcos regime.

Ramos, famous in later years for holding unlit cigars, narrowly won a contested election in 1992 to replace the People Power leader Corazon Aquino who unseated Marcos.

Though he gained less than 23% of the vote, Ramos soon polled at 66% support, and his presidency was remembered for a period of peace, stability, and growth.
