Actress Ella Cruz has been heavily criticized by netizens over the weekend following her statement comparing history to gossip or tsismis.

Cruz made the controversial statement in an interview promoting their upcoming film "Maid in Malacañang," a pro-Marcos movie wherein she portrays the role of Irene Marcos, the younger sister of President Ferdinand Marcos and Sen. Imee Marcos.

"History is like ‘tsismis.’ It is filtered and dagdag na rin, so hindi natin alam what is real history. Andoon na iyong mga idea, pero may mga bias talaga. As long as we’re here alive at may kanya-kanyang opinion, I respect everyone’s opinion," she said.

"Kasi struggling na eh, last three days! Kahit naman sila struggling even right now, di ba? So, paano kaya iyon na there (was) so much pressure on their side during those times?" she continued.

[Because they were struggling in the last three days! Even now they are struggling, right? So what more when there was so much pressure on their side during those times?]

Her statement did not sit well with netizens, including some celebrities and historians who told Cruz to refresh her memory of the Philippines' history.

Historian Ambeth Ocampo slammed Cruz over her remark, reminding her to not "confuse history and tsismis."

"History may have bias, but it is based on fact, not opinion. Real history is about truth, not lies, not fiction," Ocampo said.

Directed by Darryl Yap, the film "Maid In Malacañang" is about the Marcos family’s last three days in the presidential palace back in 1986.
