Filipino pole vaulter and Olympian Ernest John Obiena finished in fifth place, while Mondo Duplantis continued to slam records during the Silesia leg of the Wanda Diamond League in Poland early Monday (Manila time).
Obiena cleared 5.62 meters and 5.82 meters on his first attempts but failed twice at 5.92 meters and then opted to skip that height.
The 28-year-old Filipino athlete and World no. 3 was eliminated from medal contention after failing to clear 6 meters in his final attempt.
Previously, Obiena finished in joint third place at the Lausanne leg of the Diamond League in Switzerland on August 22.
Meanwhile, Swedish pole vaulter Armand "Mondo" Duplantis focused on breaking records, setting a new world record by clearing 6.26 meters on his second attempt at that height.
He was able to break his previous 6.25 mark which he achieved during the 2024 Paris Olympics where he clinched the gold medal.
Prior to his record-setting jump, the 24-year-old Duplantis smoothly cleared 5.62 meters, 5.92 meters, and 6.00 meters on his first attempts. When he reached 6.26 meters, it took him two attempts to achieve a new world record.
American Sam Kendricks finished in second place with a season-high clearance of 6.00 meters on his second try. The bronze medal was awarded to Emmanouil Karalis of Greece, who managed to clear 6.00 meters after three attempts.
