by Alessandra C. Frianela06 February 2025

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) asserted that the EDSA Busway is one of the most efficient public road transport systems in Metro Manila, amid proposals for its removal.

In an official statement on Wednesday, the DOTr reported that over 63 million commuters experienced efficient travel along the EDSA Busway in 2024.

Additionally, in early 2025, the EDSA Busway has already served over 5.5 million passengers, with an average of 177,000 commuters daily reaching their destinations safely, efficiently, and conveniently.

"The EDSA busway is seen as a crucial step towards a progressive public transportation system with 23 stations operating 24/7, affording commuters a safe and reliable options for transport," the DOTr explained.

"Today, Secretary Jaime J. Bautista is waiting for the result of the feasibility study on how best to improve the EDSA Busway tapping private sector technical and financial expertise. The goal is to improve commuter experience without worsening existing traffic conditions," the agency added.

Meanwhile, DOTr Secretary Bautista stated that the proposal to open bike lanes for mixed use with motorcycles requires further study.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) previously discussed the possibility of removing the EDSA Busway as part of efforts to improve traffic flow in Metro Manila once the capacity of the Metro Rail Transit 3 (MRT-3) is expanded.

MMDA Chairman Romando Artes emphasized that if the planned expansion enables the trains to accommodate all passengers, buses would no longer be necessary.
