The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has ordered MRT-3 maintenance provider, Sumitomo Corporation, to immediately fix the train's signaling system to prevent further malfunctions.
According to Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon, the problem that occurred yesterday, August 15, which caused delays for several MRT-3 passengers, must not happen again.
The problem with the train's signaling system began at around 9 a.m. yesterday and was resolved in just over an hour.
Secretary Dizon noted that he saw the long queues, especially at the Cubao station, as passengers lined up extensively during the system disruption. He has since instructed the maintenance team to immediately address the issue and ensure that such a scenario does not repeat.
Moreover, the damaged escalator at the LRT-1 FPJ Station is now operational and safe for passenger use.
This follows an incident in which passengers were injured due to the escalator malfunction. One female passenger was taken to the hospital for a check-up and was discharged within two hours. Meanwhile, six other passengers received first aid.
The private operator of LRT-1, Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC), completed repairs to the escalator at around 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.
The DOTr assures the public that it will continue working closely with operators and maintenance providers to prevent similar incidents in the future.
They also emphasized that they are prioritizing the reliability of station facilities to ensure the safety and convenience of all passengers.
