DOJ orders Antipolo prosecutor office to coordinate with gov’t agencies after death of grade 5 pupil
by Ada Pelonia05 October 2023

The Department of Justice (DOJ) on Thursday, Oct. 5, directed the Office of the City Prosecutor of Antipolo City to coordinate with law enforcement agencies regarding the probe of possible offenses related to the death of 14-year-old Francis Gumikib.

“DOJ condemns any act of violence and abuse perpetuated against our children. Child abuse in any form is an abhorrent violation of children’s rights and a crime that should never be tolerated. Children, especially learners, deserve a safe and nurturing environment where they can grow, learn, and thrive without fear of abuse,” the statement read.

The directive came following Francis Gumikib’s death 11 days after his teacher, Mirasol Sison, allegedly slapped him. The grade 5 pupil suffered from severe headaches, earache, and vomiting before going into a coma that led to his death.

According to the DOJ, Gumukib’s autopsy is currently being conducted in the Philippine National Police (PNP) Forensic Laboratory.

“The DOJ would like to remind teachers/educators that they hold a position of trust and responsibility in a child’s life. Thus, any abuse of this trust is a betrayal of the highest order. Likewise, under the Department of Education Child Protection Policy, there is zero tolerance for any form of abuse and violence. Corporal punishment is prohibited, and the practice thereof may subject the erring teacher/educator to administrative and criminal proceedings,” the statement further read.
