The Department of Health (DOH) and the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS) have advised the public on how to protect themselves amid the Taal volcano’s phreatic activity.

To protect oneself from the ash fall, the departments recommend staying indoors; to know the state roads are in; to ready one’s emergency “Go Bag” containing sufficient supplies of water, food, clothes, first aid, and medicines; to clean the roof and drains of one’s house after the ash fall; and lastly, to tune in on local authorities’ advisories.

To care for one’s respiratory system—the nose, lungs, and so on—the departments advise keeping windows shut, and putting up damp curtains. Wearing a facemask or a damp handkerchief over one’s nose and mouth is also recommended, and for people with allergies and/or asthma, they should ensure they have an adequate supply of medications. Moreover, people who have trouble breathing should seek medical consultation.

To care for one’s eyes, both departments suggest people wear safety goggles to keep debris out, and refrain from using contact lenses in the meantime. They urged the public not to scratch their eyes but to rinse them if irritated instead. Should anyone have problems with their eyesight, they should consult a doctor.

To ensure food safety, it is advised that people wash their hands thoroughly prior to handling food or eating and that fruits and vegetables be rinsed with running water. People should make sure their stocked food has not expired, and to properly cover their containers of water.

The volcano has emitted hot fumes which have accumulated into clouds above it but has remained at Alert Level 1.
