The Department of Agriculture (DA) on Tuesday issued a new suggested retail price (SRP) for imported red onion in wet markets in the National Capital Region (NCR).
Under DA Administrative Circular No. 5 dated February 6, the price of medium and big-sized red onions is now Php 125 per kilogram.
"[I]n order not to aggravate the current difficulties of the Filipino people affected by the pandemic and rising fuel prices, there is a need to guide the consuming public on the reasonable prices of basic necessities in the market,” the order reads.
DA said the new SRP is in accordance with the directives of President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr., who also sits as the concurrent Agriculture chief.
In December last year, the price of onions soared to Php 600 per kilo.
According to the agriculture department's monitoring as of February 6, the imported red onion ranges from Php 180 to Php 260 per kilo.
Local red onion is currently priced at Php 230 to Php 320 per kilo while the local white onion is Php 120 to Php 250 per kilo.
