The Comission on Election (Comelec) cancelled the special election in Negros Oriental's 3rd Legislative District that is set on Dec. 9.
The cancelation was announced by Comelec chairman George Garcia in a press briefing on Wednesday, Nov. 8.
"Ang Comission en banc ay in-adopt ang recommendation ng ating law department," he said.
"Ang nakalagay sa recommendation ay: 'We submit that House Resolution 136 which calls for the conduct of special election in the 3rd District of the province of Negros Oriental is deemed recalled and abandoned upon passage of House Resolution 154. Therefore, in the legislative power of Congress, the law department and the en banc cancel the conduct of the special election in the 3rd Legislative District of the province of Negros Oriental and for the Comission to discontinue preparation for the said special elections'," Garcia continued.
The Comelec chairman directed the regional director and election officers of Comelec Negros Oriental to inform "all the parties, including all the citizen arm and interest groups, and stakeholders" that the election will not push through on Dec. 9.
DZRH obtained copy of House Resolution No. 154 addressed to the Comelec chairman.
In the resolution, the lower house urged the Comelec to reconsider its earlier resolution about the special election "given all the existing circumstances and present predicament affecting the province."
Three personalities have already filed their Certificate of Candidacy (COC) for the Negros Oriental 3rd District Representative position before the Comelec Negros Oriental.
These include former Negros Oriental governor Pryde Henry Teves, incumbent Mayor of Bacong, Negros Oriental Lenin Alviola, and Retired Colonel Rey Lopez.
