Mayor Johnrey Tiangco permanently shuts down Icy Point Cold Storage and Processing Company at the corner of Lapu-Lapu and Naval streets in Navotas City after a devastating fire and ammonia leak.
Following the explosion and release of ammonia, which caused 23 individuals to be hospitalized and one fatality due to respiratory distress, Mayor Tiangco took decisive action.
About 200 residents living near the cold storage facility were evacuated following reports of dizziness and vomiting while the establishment's 400 employees were barred from entry.
As stated in the city hall's closure order, a thorough investigation will be conducted, examining the business permit, building permit, storage capacity, and other potential liabilities.
“We have ordered the temporary closure of Icy Point Cold Storage pending investigation that will be conducted jointly by BFP-Navotas, City Health Office, Sanidad, City Environment & Natural Resources Office, and Business Permits and Licensing Office,” the city government said.
“We have also deployed health workers and placed an ambulance on standby to provide immediate medical care, if needed,” it added.
This incident is not the first time that the cold storage facility has emitted foul odors, causing many individuals to feel dizzy upon inhaling the air while they slept.
The city hall further announced that all discharged patients will be provided with free burial services for the deceased.
